Kozhikode Backwaters

Kozhikode Backwaters are located in the north of Kerala in India. Kozhikode was formerly known as Calicut. Kozhikode was earlier ruled by the local rulers called Zamorins who traded with merchants from Arabia. It was referred to as the 'great province of the Malabar'. The place is popular as Vasco De Gama, the first European landed here in 1498. During the regime of the Britishers, Kozhikode was an important British trading outpost.

Kozhikode BackwatersBest Time To Visit :
As in other parts of Kerala, Kozhikode enjoys the tropical climate. Summers are hot and humid with the maximum temperature of 36°C and minimum temperature of 32°C. While in winters the maximum temperature is 18°C but sometimes it also falls down to as low as 10°C. The best time to plan out the tour to the Kozhikode Backwaters lies between the month of September to May.

Kozhikode Backwaters Cruises :
Kozhikode offers its tourists a unique backwaters experience. The houseboats slowly moving in the calm backwaters of Kozhikode takes you on the momentous journey sailing along the Kallai river and Canoli river. Spending holidays on one of the lavish houseboats is a lifetime experience for the tourists. You can avail the service of the houseboats from the from Purakkattiri. Exotic natural beauty, green clouds and pristine beaches will surely add an extra sparkle to your journey.

Wildlife exploration :
Tourists can also take the wildlife tour by making a visit to the famous Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary. Located at the distance of 25 km from Kozhikode, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is a home to several domestic as well as migratory birds such as Sand Pipers, whimbrels, Terns, Gulls, Grey Herons and many more. Tourists can carry their binoculars along with themselves and indulge in bird watching at this point. It is great place to spot the rare species of birds in their natural habitats.

Bicycle Ride :
You can set out to explore the exotic natural beauty of the place by taking a cycling ride around the town. The peace and serenity of the that surrounds you while you are on the tour is something beyond comprehension.

Tourists Attractions :

Kappad Beach : Kappad beach is the same beach where Vasco De Gama -the Portuguese explorer first set his foot in India. Tourists can try out fishing along with the local villagers. The specialty about this beach is that even after 500 years this beach remains untouched and unruffled making it one of the most pristine beaches of Kerala.

Payyoli Beach :
Payyoli is a beautiful stretch of golden sands with shallow waters that border Velliyamkallu. It is the ideal beach for trying out the various water sports.

Dolphin Point :
Dolphin point lies at the distance of 2 km from Kozhikode and has a light house and two piers. It is a good place to spot dolphins jumping and playing in the sea water. It is quite popular among the locals because of the Loins Club Park.

Pazhassirajah Museum :
Than the tourists can also make a visit to the famous Pazhassirajah Museum, which houses the rare collection of the ancient coins, bronze sculptures, paintings and murals and various temple models.
